Prompt and regular school attendance is a prerequisite for academic success and helps students to develop personal responsibility.

Absences
Please call the School Office if your child will be absent from school for any reason. The office will notify your child’s teacher for you. When your child is absent due to illness, please make sure that he/she is symptom free for a 24-hour period prior to returning to school. When returning to school, students should bring a note stating reason of absence (illness/personal).

If you anticipate that your child will miss five (5) or more days of school for a non-excused absence (i.e., trip, etc.), please ask your child’s teacher to furnish assignments. Assignments are to be completed during your child’s absence so that he/she can keep up with the class, however, the student is still considered absent and the district does not receive funding for absences.

Tardies
Students who arrive late to school need to report directly to the school office for an admit slip to class. Prompt and regular school attendance is important to the success of all students. When students arrive late to class, not only do they miss important classroom opening activities and directions, but, also, their arrival can be disruptive to the flow of the instructional program for the other students.

Signing Students Out of Class Early
Students are expected to remain on the school grounds during school hours unless special arrangements have been made. Students who go off campus for lunch must be under the supervision of their parent/guardian or a designated adult. Children may be excused from school for personal business if a written request from the parent/guardian is cleared through the school office.

All students who leave school before the end of the school day must be signed out in the school office. If they return again that day the parent must sign them back in through the office.

Lunch Permits
Students going home for lunch must have a current lunch permit on file in the office. Students with a permit are excused at lunch to their home only. If the student walks home, he must carry this permit. The permit is picked up at the school office each day before lunch and returned after lunch.

Important Information About School Funding
Beginning July 1, 1998, school districts no longer received funding from the State of California for students who are absent from school. This includes all absences, even those related to illness, medical or doctor appointments or for the purposes of attending funeral services of a member of the immediate family. In other words, schools receive funding only for students who actually attend school. The school loses approximately $26 a day for each student who is absent.

If you find it necessary to keep your child out of school for reasons other than illness, we encourage you to send your child to school for at least part of the day so that your child will not be counted absent and also will not miss out on important school assignments. It is crucial that local schools continue to receive the financial resources necessary to provide quality educational services and reduce program cuts. We want to avoid the unnecessary absences that reduce district resources and limit your child’s opportunity to obtain good grades.

Studies show that there is a direct correlation between good school attendance and student achievement. Therefore, we encourage you as parents to enforce the importance of good school attendance and to make every effort to send your child to school on a regular basis.
