John Adams Emergency Plan [see map...]
John Adams has an Emergency Plan that will be followed in the event of a disaster. Students will be kept under school supervision and will not be released without parent or designee contact, or until the emergency is over. Should an earthquake or other disaster occur during school hours, your child will be cared for until he/she can be reunited with you.We encourage you to sign up as an emergency volunteer. Once you are screened by the Torrance Police Department, you are authorized to be on campus to assist during an emergency. Please read the following instructions carefully so that you will know the proper procedure should a disaster strike. Your cooperation is vital in any emergency.
Emergency Telephone Tree
- DO NOT telephone the school. Telephone lines may be needed for emergency communications.
- DO NOT drive to school. Walk to school to pick up your child. Streets must be kept open for emergency vehicles.
- The school’s back gate, located on 237th Street, will be designated as the check-in gate, which will be used for entering by students and parents during a disaster. The “Z” gate located on 237th Street will be the exit, or “Reunion” gate. You will be required to sign out with school personnel after you make contact and before leaving the school grounds. School staff will unite you with your child. [see map...]
- Tune your radio to KFI 640 AM or KNX 1070 AM for emergency announcements.
- Please keep your two green emergency cards up-to-date with the school office. Inform the office when changes in phone numbers occurs.
- Impress upon your children the need for them to follow directions of school personnel. All school staff members have had special emergency training.
An integral part of our emergency procedure is the Emergency Telephone Tree. Should we need to get a hold of parents during the school day or after school hours to notify you of an emergency situation at school, the Telephone Tree is the most efficient and effective procedure we know of.“Shelter-In-Place” and “Lock-Down” Procedures
If a situation arises in which the environment is unsafe for students to be outside, we will “Shelter In Place.” This may be triggered by a variety of incidents including: chemical releases, hazardous materials, noxious odors, police/fire-related incidents, etc. A “Lock-Down” occurs when there is any kind of presence on campus that might compromise the safety of our students. Our “Lock-Down” procedures are similar to “Shelter-In-Place” procedures except, the windows and doors do not need to be taped. In both actions, we call classrooms to keep teachers posted on the event.School Site Action
- Ring “Shelter-In-Place” signal (one long, two short, repeated) and/or announce over the all-call system. If time permits, place a “Sheltering-In-Place” sign at the entrance of the school.
- Students/staff clear fields immediately and report to classrooms - close and lock all doors/windows to outside.
- Tape doors and windows to make airtight, turn off pilot lights, air-conditioning and exhaust fans.
- Close drapes and curtains over windows; stay away from external windows.
- Students/visitors coming to school during a “Sheltering-In-Place” report to staff room in office, rather than classroom.
- When the incident commander notifies district/administrator the incident has subsided, ring all-clear bell.
- A parent notification should be sent home on the day of an event.
John Adams has an emergency telephone and all-call system at our school. We are well prepared to communicate in emergency situations and to provide a safe-environment for all of our students, staff, and campus visitors. We also have an emergency radio that allows us to communicate with the Torrance Fire Department to stay informed of any emergency situation in the City that would affect our school.
