National PTA
The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) is a self-governing unit that plans its programs and activities to meet the
needs of children and youth in the community.  Each PTA has its own characteristics, but its underlying purpose
of promoting the welfare of children and youth unites all PTA’s and gives continuity and nationwide significance
to their work.
Purposes of the PTA
  • To promote the welfare of children and youth in home, school, community, and place of worship.
  • To raise the standards of home life.
  • To secure adequate laws for the care and protection of children and youth.
  • To bring into closer relation the home and the school, that parents and teachers may cooperate
intelligently in the education of children and youth.
  • To develop between educators and the general public such unified efforts as will secure for all children
and youth the highest advantages in physical, mental, social and spiritual education.
PTA Mission
The mission of the California State PTA is to represent our members and to empower and support them with
skills in advocacy, leadership, and communication to positively impact the lives of all children.
Adopted by the California State PTA Board of Managers, March 1999, Reaffirmed March 2004.
California State PTA Core Values
  • The California State PTA is a professional, non-profit volunteer organization committed to the well-being
    of all children.
  • We believe every adult has a responsibility to ensure that all children develop to their full potential.
  • We believe parents are children’s first teachers and that parent involvement is essential throughout a
    child’s educational experience.
  • We believe that family is the basic unit of society responsible for the support and nurturing of all
children, and we recognize that “the family” may be defined in many ways.
  • We believe our responsibility includes advocating for the safety and welfare of all children and the
opportunity for a quality public education for each child.
Five Reasons to Join the PTA
1. Be more involved with your children and with what they do at school.
2. Help with and participate in school events and programs.
3. Make a difference in the lives of children and youth.
4. Promote quality education and a true partnership between home and school.
5. Join millions of others who care about issues that affect all children.

PTA President's Message:

WELCOME BACK Patriot Community!
My name is Lucy, your PTA President.  I’m guessing that you’ve found this 1ST FULL WEEK of school to be as hectic as I
have!  Transitioning from summer vacation to ‘Back to School’ is definitely a lifestyle change.  But, it feels good to be back at
John Adams and see friends and staff again!

Here’s something to celebrate-- HAPPY 50TH BIRTHDAY John Adams Elementary School!  Mark your calendars for a
spectacular celebration that will take place at our Spring Carnival on April 23, 2010.

YOUR PTA Board has been working hard since August preparing for the many events and services that PTA sponsors for your
children.  We are all VOLUNTEERS and we count on you to support PTA by becoming a PTA member (membership
envelopes are enclosed), volunteering your time, contributing needed materials, participating in fund raisers, and/or attending
events with your children.

“COMMUNICATE & COLLABORATE FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE CHILDREN” is our PTA motto this year.  “The 3 C’s”.  All of
our hard work and fund raising is for the children.  But it does take all of us as a community to maximize those benefits.

The Torrance District’s SHRINKING BUDGET continues to create challenges for our principal, teachers and staff to run this
school and to provide all that the children need and deserve.  You and your PTA HELP SUPPLEMENT so much for the
children and school.

We THANK MRS. SKORA, our principal, for supporting our PTA and doing a fantastic job of successfully running our school on
the limited resources she’s given.

I’m on campus quite a bit, so come SEE ME if you have any questions or comments about PTA.  You can also drop a note at
the office or email me at
lucy.sheardown@gmail.com.

THANK YOU in advance for your support and active participation this year!
